Museum at Eldridge Street

12 Eldridge Street
New York, NY 10002
212-219-0888

The Museum at Eldridge Street presents the culture, history and traditions of the great wave of Jewish immigrants to the Lower East Side, drawing parallels with the diverse cultural communities that have settled in America.

The Museum at Eldridge Street is located within the Eldridge Street Synagogue, which opened its doors in 1887. Nearly lost to time, harsh weather and limited use, this National Historic Landmark has been faithfully restored to its original, evocative grandeur. A powerful symbol of cultural continuity and immigrant aspirations, the building bears poignant reminders of the past – preserved for generations to come.

Today the Eldridge Street Synagogue is the only remaining marker of the great wave of Jewish migration to the Lower East Side that is open to a broad public. The Museum at Eldridge Street honors the generations that carried religious and communal customs to a new country, and continues their journey with exhibits, public and educational programs that celebrate and reinterpret America’s broad cultural traditions.
