The 1891 Fredonia Opera House is a 117-year-old Victorian-era proscenium theatre, which was completely restored and reopened in 1994 as a regional performing arts center. The restoration was accomplished via a grassroots capital campaign that raised more than $1 million. Volunteers contributed in excess of 30,000 hours of labor during the restoration process. Total seating for the Opera House is 444. Owned by the Village of Fredonia, and located adjacent to Village Hall, the Opera House is operated by the not-for-profit 1891 Fredonia Opera House, Inc.
The 1891 Fredonia Opera House is the only year-round performing arts center in Chautauqua County. Nearly 17,000 people attended 115 events held at the Opera House in 2007 including: live performance events in music, theater and dance; a 26-film Cinema Series that features independent and foreign films and documentaries; meetings, conferences, workshops and seminars; fund-raising events; political debates; and weddings.
