Lehman Center for the Performing Arts, Inc., located on the tree-lined campus of Lehman College/CUNY in the northwest Bronx, has been serving community residents for over 27 years and is the foremost presenting arts organization in the borough. Founded in 1980 with a 2,310-seat Concert Hall, the Center is an independent 501(c)(3) organization and the largest professional venue in the Bronx. Through its innovative programming, the Center provides audiences with the opportunity to experience the very best of the performing arts at reasonable ticket prices. These performances reflect the rich cultural traditions of long-time and newly-arrived residents.
Approximately 50,000 audience members are served by Center events each season drawn predominantly from the Bronx and lower-Westchester, but also from the greater tri-state area. Programs range from ethnic folkdance to classical ballet and salsa bands to symphony orchestras. In FY 08, these included such artists as the State Symphony Orchestra of Mexico, Smokey Robinson, African Footprint, Gilberto Santa Rosa, and Moscow Classical Ballet. Ticket discounts reached seniors citizens, students, the physically-challenged, and Bronx Culture Card holders, with many balcony seats available for as little as $10.
A free introduction to the performing arts is provided to 15,000 Bronx school children in Grades K-12 -- tomorrow’s audience -- through weekday events recently featuring such groups as Ailey II, Choco Orta & Orchestra, Big Wooden Horse Theatre Company, and performance artist David Gonzalez. Study guides provided by the Center make important connections between the arts and the classroom curriculum. In addition, the Center services more than 100,000 other audience members who pass through the Center’s doors while attending a range of cultural events, meetings, graduations, etc. separately sponsored by community-based organizations that appreciate the convenience and affordability of the venue.
